I just leave it on all the time - not particularly energy efficient but it's not that bad. I thought about using an ApplianceLinc but the receiver I replaced the Pioneer with doesn't have a physical toggle on/off button so when power is removed then reapplied it doesn't actually turn on.

You could always try the IR transmitter... I have one of my zones controls with a small amp that I turn on and off that way. Pretty pricey at 80 bucks... but might be worth it depending on how much power the receiver is sucking.

I'm planning on using an old NAD receiver to power a bathroom speaker. It has an on/off button but no IR.

I've tried having the button always ON, and adding power ON/OFF with an ApplianceLinc, but when the ApplianceLinc turns ON there is a 'thud' thru the speaker. Not a very sexy solution.

Has anyone else done the "old receiver, w/ airport express" config?

I would hate to think the ONLY solution is to keep the receiver ON 24/7

I had an NAD amp in college and I remember having to deal with the thump issue when turning the amp on or off. If I recall correctly, you can eliminate it or at least reduce it by turning the amp on first and off first, allowing a small delay before then turning the pre-amp on or off. If you're feeding the airport express (which doesn't have an on/off) directly into the NAD, you might try turning off the feed to that airport in iTunes before you turn the amp on and then turning the feed back on after a slight delay. From what I remember the NAD doesn't have the internal delay circuitry that some amps do to prevent the thump.

If you decide to take Jay's advice, Parasound has a very nice amp that I use for exactly this purpose. You can connect the airport express directly to it and it will automatically turn itself on and off based on whether the airport is feeding it a signal. So all you have to do is control the input to the airport from iTunes.

Here's a link to it on amazon. :)
