Post Sending command from server to control page
Can you send a command from the server to an open control page (I.e., a command that is not instigated by the control page itself)?

What I'm trying to achieve is the following:
1) I'm using a wall mounted iPad as my information/control device. It has an indigo control page on it.
2) I'd like to set up a timeout script or plugin on the server that will implement a count down timer for a specified period of time (say 2 minutes)
3) each time an input is received from the control page, the count down timer will restart
4) if and when the count down timer reaches 0, the server will send a message to the control page causing it to switch/go to another control page. That control page will consist of a slide show made up of a refreshinginageurl
5) upon receiving a tap on the new control page, the server will send a message to return to the original control page

What I'm attempting to do is have the control page timeout to a slide show screen saver until someone interacts with it. If there is a better way to approach this, I'm open.

Thanks for any feedback

FYI - I've also posted this on the hacking thread of the forum. I'm still trying to figure out where these types of posts go, so I apologize for the duplication.

Instead of cross posting, please sends us an email request to move it to a different forum.

Since your dup post didn't have any replies, I just deleted it. And I moved your other dup thread to this sub-forum and deleted the dup.

I guess that answers one of my questions...this is the correct thread to post these things. :)

I've also posted a question about iRule on the hacks thread of the forum. Would that have been more appropriate here? And, if so, could you move it?

Thanks!

It is fine for it to stay there. I'm less concerned about threads being under the exact correct sub-forum than I am about having duplicate threads which will cause duplicate answers and forked discussions about the same topic. Keep in mind we are a relatively small community, so I think most regulars probably read all of the forums.

What you want (Indigo Server to drive a Control Page change on a client) is not currently possible. I cannot think of any good workarounds, but maybe someone else will have a creative solution.

There might be a photoframe app that can act as a screensaver when backgrounded - not sure. The only other way I can think of would be the approach I'm taking which is to design your own web-based client outside of Indigo and add the functionality using javascript.

Terry,

That's along the lines I was thinking. I have done some ios app programming before, and I have an ios developer account, so I was thinking of creating a simple app that shows the control page and times out to a slide show if no input is received for awhile. The advantage of this approach would be the ability to use local images stored on the ipad (i.e., photos) for the slide show instead of pulling them down from my server (which is better for my application). It will be awhile until I can get to that, though, because I'm working on plugins for Indigo. :) If and when I put an app together, I'll make it available for free in the app store so others can try it.

As a more advanced idea, I'd like to have an app that downloads the control page locally. The app would then use it as a template, but could insert additional things into it. What I'm going for here is the ability to add "beeps" as feedback on the push of buttons and other interactions, but it would also open the door to other extensions of the control page. iRule has this button feedback and I've grown rather attached to it. Of course, this is something for the future. :)
