Post Indigo Touch and iRedTouch
Hoping for a little input from those of you who use Indigo Touch and iRedTouch. My overall objective is to control everything in my home (at least lights, appliances, thermostat and AV equipment) from one iPhone app if possible. Both iRedTouch and Indigo Touch support custom control pages so it seems I can get the look I want in either one.

I have a couple of irLinc transmitters I have been experimenting with in Indigo and Indigo Touch to control my AV stuff. For the most part it works well, but does not deal particularly well with sustained or repeated commands like volume.

I have also ordered an irTrans unit which I would use with iRedTouch. I understand that system does support repeat commands.

My question is what level of integration is possible between the two. Can one app's control page be called from within the other app, essentially switching between apps from one control page to another? That would be ideal I think, since I prefer the Indigo Touch interface for Insteon devices, and think I prefer the iRedTouch interface for AV devices.

On the other hand, I assume I can send Indigo commands from iRedTouch pages. Does that require applescript or does iRed2 code handle all of that?

I would be interested in the experience of those who use both or have dealt with these same issues.

Thanks a lot.

In Ired you can set up applescript commands for all of your AV...In turn you control those scripts via indigo... Teach or learn the ir codes to irtrans then make an applescript for the command..call the script from indigo to function that is the cleanest method i believe all i use irtrans for is a middleman to send and receive ir

Hey Harvey--

Thanks. Not to seem like I'm hung up on one thing, but tell me how you deal with holding the volume control down... Assuming you're calling the AppleScript from an Indigo Touch button, Indigo does not understand the concept of holding a button down. So when you press it, it simply sends one command.

The way you would expect a volume control to work would either be like a slider, where you move it and volume increases a certain percent (like Sonos, which is extremely quick and accurate) or you would hold down the button and release it when the volume gets to the level you want.

How do you handle that?

Post Slider control
Has anyone implemented a slider control in the Indigo Touch UI? I know a slider pops up for controlling a light, but is there any way to use a generic version of the slider for other devices and write a script to react to the slider movement?

Right, I understand that, but Indigo has no way to know when I've released the button.... How do I control the repetition in an intuitive way?

Unfortunately, this is not currently possible either.

If the iRedTouch application supports launching a URL, then you can have it launch the Indigo Touch application (and you can specify what Control Page is shown). This forum post documents the different type of Indigo Touch URLs. Indigo can, when clicking on a Control Page item, launch an arbitrary URL. So if iRedTouch can be launched via a URL like Indigo Touch, then it might be possible to define controls to bounce back and forth between the two.

Because of the way the iPhone works, each application will have to re-launch when you switch back to it. This might or might not produce too much latency to be usable depending on your requirements (and speed of your particular iPod touch or iPhone).

And I'd love to know whether I can call a specific control page in iRedTouch from Indigo Touch and vice versa.....

Sorry Jay, my last post crossed yours.

Are there any plans for any sort of generic slider or access to a generic version of the pop-up?

No problem. I'm Matt but we both answer support questions around here so it can get confusing.

We have lots of plans for Indigo Touch improvements, including adding more plug-in type support for other hardware and applications (some of this might help with what you want). But we don't yet have any public time line for these types of features.

OK, thanks. I'm totally pleased with Indigo (actually bought my first Mac just to run it, but am liking the Mac better every day...) and if it supported repeating commands I'd have no need to use any other iPhone based app. But all the kludges I've tried to deal with volume control for AV are just not good enough, and that's a pretty important function for AV, which along with lighting is 90% of what I do with my automation system.

On the other hand, iRedTouch does support repeating commands and I can comfortably use it to control AV if I have to, and Indigo Touch for lighting, climate control, sprinklers, etc. I was just hoping for some method to integrate everything so it appears as a single UI even if its not....

I guess I should consider myself lucky there are 2 capable programs to use. The good news is the commands sent by iRedTouch can easily be sent by Indigo, so if/when Indigo Touch does add this functionality I can probably move everything into it without a lot of pain.

Just wish I could do it now....
