Replacing 2414U With 2413U

What is the best way to go about changing the controller from 2414U to 2413U in Indigo4 ?

Here are my thoughts for now before the guru's weigh in .....

1) Preferences/Interface Options - Clear links on 2414U
2) Unplug and replace with 2413U
3) Preferences - Change to 2413U
4) Interface - Choose Interface/Serial Port
5) Load 3rd Party Driver if necessary
6) Resync all links ?

Unsure of the links that exist for the 2414U controller and how Indigo will handle them.
Any suggestions to keep the frustration level down are welcome.

Thanks

I forget the exact steps I took but it was quite self explanatory and automatic. Just go for it.

Re: Replacing 2414U With 2413U

I just switched from a 2414U to a 2413U. It was simple / easy. Here are the steps that worked for me:

1. Shut down mac that runs Indigo server
2. Replace 2414U with 2413U into same outlet using same USB cord
3. Restart mac and open Indigo then select the 2413U by clicking: Interface -> Choose Interface / Serial Port -> Interface Type: PowerLinc Modem 2412U/2412S/2413U/2413S...

From there Indigo will tell you if you need the driver (I didn't because I had a failed attempt to replace the 2414U with a 2412U about a month earlier) and will then prompt you to resync.

My experience after about 1.5 weeks is that the 2413U is noticeably faster than the 2414U and much more reliable than the 2412U. Very happy with it and hope it works as well for you.

Re: Replacing 2414U With 2413U

What is the advantage of the 2413 vs the 2414? I looked and it seemed it only did RF and the power line leg bridge. I already have several access points.

I was looking to see if the RF would reinforce the powerline signal for regular Insteon communications, e.g. not just to Venstar Thermostats, and didn't find any info.

This Wiki article explains the main differences between the 2414U, 2413 and 2412.

Re: Replacing 2414U With 2413U

I read the article- thank you for the link- but had a couple of questions.

Are insteon commands transmitted and received between access points/2413 via rf to skip over the powerline? Otherwise it seems that the 2413 may be "advanced" but without enough infrastructure to yet warrant a switch in an otherwise well functioning system? I basically have about 45 togglelincs, lamplincs, switchlincs and venstar thermostats all running on a dedicated 24/7 iMac. How would a 2413 benefit such a setup?

Btw don't mean to hijack the thread.....If this question should be moved to a more appropriate thread feel free to do so.

Are you asking if the 2413 can bridge two completely separate (i.e. isolated) A/C segments via RF? For example, on opposite sides of the power company transformer.

As far as is known, the 2413 cannot do anything that could not be done by combining a 2412 PLM and a 2443 AccessPoint. But, to answer what I think is your question, I do not see any reason why you could not use a 2413 + a 2443 (or just 2 2443s) to bridge two separate A/C segments with RF.

If you were asking something else, could you give more information about what you are trying to do.

What I meant to ask was if tie 2413 could bypass the power line and send the insteon command directly to another access point, ar which it returns to the power line to execute an action in a device. Prob not, I know.

Is there a list of extended insteon commands? I did a search and didn't see one. Would be helpful to decide if it is worthwhile to get one.

hamw did you see these other two threads on this subject?

The evidence so far points to the dual-band technology being what we would hope it is - i.e. that the RF interface is wired up in a way that the signals do not first have to pass through the powerline interface. This makes it better than a 2412U + access point because it saves one Insteon "hop".

Whether you will get better signal quality in your home depends on the particular nature of whatever problems you might be having already, and whether you are dependent on the RF medium to reach the other power leg.

As for the 2414U it has other limitations including slowness. It didn't bother me much but I am happy with the speedup after switching to 2413U.

Re: Replacing 2414U With 2413U

Done switching successfully. I found a few stray links (Uneraseable) and performed a factory reset on those devices. Not sure if it would have helped to clear the links on the 2414 before switching. Love the syncing speed over the 2414 and being able to use the health script by SeanAdams to actually measure problem devices/performance. One example ... I installed a TV and forgot to place the a noise filter (it was close to my controller!).. overall performance went from 95 to 100%. Devices on the longer power legs (North 40) were getting a weak/no signal.

Very happy with the switch.
