Hi

I'm having trouble adding an ApplianceLinc to Indigo. When I try to define it, it says Failed to Establish Linc. I've done this multiple times on different outlets, even right next to the Powerlinc. I thought it was bad and RMA'd it to Smarthome and they sent a new one. And again, I get a Failed to Establish Link. I don't believe it's a signal problem, I have multiple access points and a 2413U controller. I have about 2 dozen Insteon devices, and just added a Lamplinc with no problem, same day actually.

I'm not sure why on the 4th link it says 'not added -- probably already exists'. It seems kinda strange considering it's a new item. Well, thanks for any help you can give.

Let's try to clear/sync the links in the PowerLinc (only the PowerLinc, not other modules). To do so:

1) Choose Indigo 5->Preferences... menu item.

2) Press the Interface Options... button.

3) Press the Clear Links... button, wait for it to complete.

4) Press the Sync Links... button, wait for it to complete.

5) Try the Define and Sync again.

If it still fails, then copy/paste the Event Log results for all the steps above.

Open the Define and Sync dialog for the new module, then press and hold the SET button on the module until it beeps once. Then in the Define and Sync UI press the button to make the define/sync start. Copy/Paste the Event Log results.

Wow, thanks. That actually worked.

I tried doing that the first time around before clearing the links and it didn't work.

Just for my information, do you know what went wrong? Did something get mucked up or is resyncing required every now and then? Also, how come, I couldn't manually enter the address then sync?

Inside the Device dialog, what firmware version does it say the ApplianceLinc is? I'm not positive it is really working correctly -- if that is an i2CS firmware module, then Indigo won't be able to write links to it (until we release 5.1.0 which is getting very close).

You know, if Smarthome is shipping all i2CS modules nowadays (and from the number of different types of module that folks are saying won't sync, I suspect they are), it would have been kind of courteous of them to give folks a heads up that the 2414s won't work with the new modules and quit trying to get $40 bucks a pop for the (now useless) ones left in the warehouse...

I agree. As soon as we were made aware that i2CS modules were shipping we told Norm at MacHomeStore.com and he pulled the 2414U from his catalog to avoid customer confusion.

i2CS is a new firmware version for INSTEON modules. It offers many under-the-hood improvements to the INSTEON protocol. IMO the changes are good, useful and will help make the protocol more robust, but unfortunately the changes require non-trivial modifications to Indigo. We are working on it right now (and have been for a while), and getting close to an i2CS compatible release of Indigo 5.1.0.

However, i2CS modules require the use of extended INSTEON commands. The PowerLinc 2414U doesn't support extended commands, so it won't be able to remotely program settings or links in i2CS modules. Therefore, future versions of Indigo will not allow adding i2CS devices using a PowerLinc 2414U.

Matt, is there a universal firmware version used to denote i2CS, or is the firmware version that incorporates it different for each device? In other words, how would one know if the device they have is i2CS or not?

Unfortunately, it isn't universal. Because it is a major change which breaks compatibility with existing software and the PowerLinc 2414U, I was really hoping they would put an i2CS sticker on the modules or something similar.

And the problem is exasperated by the fact that to get the firmware version Indigo has to link up with the module (which, because of i2CS changes, doesn't appear to work in all cases). Note the rev sticker on the modules isn't the same as the internal firmware version. But the next release of Indigo will handle all of this much more gracefully and can detect if the firmware is i2CS or not (even with a PowerLinc 2414U). So in a few days when we have Indigo 5.1.0 released this will be less of an issue...

Thanks. That sounds encouraging, given that I'm getting ready to order some additional Insteon gear. I'm sure I'm not the only one that appreciates your efforts to keep things current.

thanks Matt for the heads up. I'm glad I got the 2413 version last year instead of the cheaper 2414. I'd be really upset to find out that I'd be locked out of Indigo with newer hardware.

Indigo 5.1.0 is now available and should solve the problem.
