Post Airfoil on Indigo
I've somehow managed to get iTunes to work on Airfoil. It distributes a selected song to my iMac, MacBook Pro and my iPhone. But, for some reason, when I switch back to Indigo it stops working. Am I missing something?

I mean, are there certain settings that I need to have set in Indigo that I might not have set?

I'm under the impression that as long as my other computers/speakers show up as "Connected" in the variable list there is no reason why any sound from Indigo shouldn't be distributed to those devices. Airfoil speakers are running on the other devices. Am I supposed to specifically tell Indigo each time I want it to broadcast?

I'm not really following you. When you say "managed to get iTunes to work on Airfoil", do you mean that when you have iTunes selected in Airfoil as the audio source, it plays iTunes through the selected speakers? Then, when you switch the audio source to IndigoServer, it stops? That's correct behavior. Airfoil directs sound from whatever you have selected in the source popup to the speakers you have selected. So, when you switch from iTunes to IndigoServer then only the sound that the IndigoServer makes will be directed.

Correct, Jay. When I have iTunes as the source, everything plays correctly. I currently have it set up and working correctly on my iMac (Indigo Server), to my MacBook Pro and even my iPhone.

BUT! When I change the source to Indigo nothing happens. I will not distribute the sound ("the back door is open" for instance) to my MacBook or my iPhone.

They both show up on the Variable List as Connected. I have ordered an AirPort Express to set up. But before I order more, I want to make sure that I can get this set up properly. Currently it's only set up to play sound on my iPhone and MacBook and it's not working.

You need to select the server, not the client. The server app is located here:

Code: Select all
/Library/Application Support/Perceptive Automation/Indigo 5/IndigoServer.app

It has clearly changed from "Indigo 5" to "IndigoServer" as the Source. However, just as before, my iPhone DOES Say "Recieving IndigoServer from Michael's iMac". So I know it's getting to the iPhone....but there's no sound.

If you're using the "Test" button in the Actions dialog then it won't - test speech is done through the client application not through the server (since they can be on separate Macs). When you actually execute an action though with speech (using the "Execute All" or "Execute Actions Now" buttons in the UI) it should work correctly. I don't have the latest Airfoil so I can't test it but Airfoil 3 works fine.

I'm not using the Test button. I am using the Execute All Actions button. That's what is so strange. Even the pictures above of my iPhone clearly show there is a connection (it took me a while to realize that those are actually snapshots of my screen and not a standard icon).

I'll keep working on this. I don't want to invest in several Airport Express devices if it's not going to work for me.

When you switch the source back to iTunes I assume that sound resumes?

This definitely seems like an Airfoil bug - I'd contact Rogue Amoeba.

Yes, when I switch the source back to iTunes or iMovie or any other source, they work fine.

I have taken the time to set up my AirPort Express and it works the same way. For whatever reason, everything transmits fine when I'm using iTunes to play music or internet radio. But when I switch the source of the sound over to Indigo it will ONLY play at my Indigo Server (iMac).

I can't help but think I'm selecting the wrong application. You've told me to select the "IndigoServer" application and not the "Indigo 5" application. I've tried both. Neither will work.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? I am completely at a loss about this.

Could you be more specific?

Post Re: Airfoil on Indigo
In my home audio setup, the audio is output via the headphone jack into a whole house audio matrix switch. I have to select "System Audio" in Airfoil as my source in order to have iTunes, Pandora or text to speech properly output to the headphone jack. Airfoil does not switch between these when I change the music source I'm listening to.

However, even though I am selecting "System Audio" as a generic output to the headphone jack, Airfoil will send the current audio source to other devices on my network - not connected to the whole house audio setup - just by turning on the appropriate device. So, from my Indigo MacMini I can activate the Airfoil speakers on my upstairs iMac and receive whatever output is coming through without making a source selection change in Airfoil.

What is probably different in your case vs mine is that I think you are using Airfoil's touch app to switch sources from your iPhone. I use Indigo to pause/play sources (they will all come through at once with this setup) and switch speakers from control pages, and use Airfoil solely to grab the ALL the audio and route to a common output. So that may not be the best solution but it seems to work OK.

Hope that makes sense?

I am using the "Execute All" Actions button

For whatever reason, it appears that forcing Indigo to speak using the "Execute All" Actions option, doesn't work for me. But I've discovered that everything runs fine when the actions run on their own. So, using the "Test" button only speaks on the computer I'm currently on. "Execute All" only plays on the Server speakers. However, forcing an action to run from my iPad or iPhone works just fine.
