Subscription Notification Emails

Last year, we let everyone know that we were increasing the cost of the Up-to-Date subscription to $64.95USD. Unfortunately, this set off a series of events that have caused us issues with our payment processor, FastSpring.

Without going into detail, their change process failed in a variety of ways for some users. Fortunately, nobody was overcharged (although some users in countries that support VAT were actually undercharged). We did some cleanup over the past few months, and today we finished updating everything. This has caused some users to get subscription update emails (which were not supposed to be sent). Please know that unless your subscription actually renewed, you did not get charged today.

Here are the scenarios in which you may have received an email today:

  1. Your subscription is going to renew in the next 4 months. The notification email in these scenarios simply means that the next time your subscription renews, it will renew including the $5USD increase.
  2. Your subscription renewed last year at the old price. Again, the notification email in these scenarios simply means that the next time your subscription renews, it will renew including the $5USD increase.
  3. Your subscription renewed last year in the first couple of weeks in December for the correct price. Unfortunately, your subscription was incorrectly updated by FastSpring in their backend systems and resulted in an incomplete update. You were charged correctly, but your next renewal would have been at the wrong price. The notification email you received today is the attempt to "fix" those subscriptions.
  4. You live in a country that supports VAT but the update incorrectly updated your subscription. Your charges last year were likely less than prior years and the notification email you saw today is an attempt to correct those. They reflect your next charge, not a charge today.
  5. You previously canceled your subscription but the catch-up period is still in effect. In this case, we went ahead and updated the subscription price just in case you decide to catch-up your subscription. Again, this will only be reflected in a charge if you catch-up your subscription from your Indigo Account, there was no charge today.
We sincerely apologize for the unclear email notifications which were not supposed to be sent while we were cleaning up the mess. But note that we believe the the majority of subscriptions are now set up to correctly re-bill at $64.95USD (not including sales or VAT tax). If you see a renewal which is incorrect, please contact us (or FastSpring directly through their Buyer Support Portal) and we will address any issues.
