 iPad Suggestions
I'm looking to purchase an iPad. Primary use is a 'remote control' for HA and AV apps. Secondary use WWW surfing. Question 1: With the price of iPad 1 [original 16gb] as low as $299, are there any compelling reasons to buy an iPad 2? I would really kick myself if I found out after it was too late that the iPad 1 was too slow, or not upgradable, etc... Are there any system requirements for Indigo Touch. Will the app perform equally well on iPad 1 and 2? Question 2: Is anyone using Re [universal remote] http://newkinetix.com/ or L5 http://www.l5remote.com/? Question 3: Do I need 3g for anything? If yes does it have any HA functionality with Insteon/Indigo? Please supply a review or personal feedback.

 Re: iPad Suggestions
Re Q#1, either iPad will definitely work well. All I have at the moment is the first generation and it is speedy.

 Re: iPad Suggestions
Will we need new icons/images for the new iPad with the higher resolution? Will we need to change size of control screen?

 Re: iPad Suggestions
Indigo Touch includes 2x images for the built-in controls already. Control pages should just work - even though there aren't any 2x versions of images they should render as well as they did on previous generations of iPads (just as they work the same when running on all iPhones). We think... I guess we'll find out on Friday!

 Re: iPad Suggestions
Hi terry.
I have 3G, it's useful for www when out and about, but I rarely use indigo over 3G, although it does of course work. Other than motion sensors, the iPad is my primary control. Just waiting for a lottery win before replacing all of the light switches with iPads.

 Re: iPad Suggestions
Update - we just found out that apparently apps need to be resubmitted in order to get the 2x graphics recognised by the new iPad. We're investigating what that will entail and will let everyone know. I can confirm that the new iPad isn't showing the 2x graphics though. While it's not a huge deal since the graphics look no worse than they did on previous iPads, we want to get the 2x graphics that show on iPhone 4/4S to show up as well so we'll work on getting a new build up on the app store. We will not be doing any other work on Indigo Touch, so don't ask...

 Re: iPad Suggestions
Jay,
Would some screen shots help between the two iPads? The indigo rendering is far superior on the new iPad, compared with the iPad2. I can email to support if useful! Are you sure you need to do anything?!? I'm sitting in wonder making pixel corrections on my layouts.

 Re: iPad Suggestions
I'm positive that the built-in tab images (devices, actions, etc) are NOT the 2x images you see on iPhone 4/4S (though the text is rendered better). Control page rendering for your background image is better because it was scaled down initially (I think). Looks great BTW. Text is rendered better obviously because we get that for free. Custom images, though, are a differnet matter I think.

 Re: iPad Suggestions
OK, so I think we've figured out your example. Is your background image larger than the iPad screen? If so, then Indigo Touch is rendering the page and then scaling it to fit the view - that scaling process, because it's done by the OS, takes into account the fact that there's a retina display attached and uses the extra pixels to make the scaled view look better. EDIT: so, if you create your control pages 2x the viewable size of a control page on an iPad, then it will scale the view down to fit exactly and will look "retina" ready. The only downside is that all the control images we supply will be tiny because we don't supply 2x versions of them (yet). We'll add that to the list of things to look into in future releases. If you create your own images though, and you make them all 2X (or just larger) then they'll look great!

 Re: iPad Suggestions
You lost me slightly, but glad it helped. Let me know if you want me to check background image sizes, and control image sizes. I can send copies if that will help.
It works and looks significantly better, so I'm happy!

 Re: iPad Suggestions
Maybe it is here already or maybe you need a jailbroken iPad but it would be nice if the Indigo app could spawn designated buttons. Like a button that would say turn off all the lights in the house, that would look like an app doing that. I can think of a dozen commands which I would love if they could be initiated by a single icon press.

 Re: iPad Suggestions
I've not used the indigo web interface, but could what you ask be completed by using HTML and shortcuts?

 Re: iPad Suggestions
I'm finally ready to buy the new iPad, unfortunately from what I have read from owners is that the WiFi is horrible- next to useless unless you are in the same room as the base station.
I have been monitoring this on 5 or 6 forums, including Apple. The majority feedback has either replaced or returned the new iPad as a failure and kept their v1 or v2 instead.
What good is a mobile device that can't be mobile! Lost signals, constant re-connects, can't connect, 20' away gets you 1 bar while iPhone gets full bars.
Items in question: - DHCP issues - Antenna power was dialed back in order to meet stated battery time - Suffers from the 'grip of death' syndrome - Firmware - Some Retina screens are yellow
Anyone here have comments?

 Re: iPad Suggestions
I haven't tried 3G/4G yet, but no problems at all here with Wi-Fi. And my Retina screen looks fantastic (no yellowness).

 Re: iPad Suggestions
I've been on a trip with mine - no problems anywhere joining various free wifi networks as well as LTE and 4G. LTE is amazing btw. I suspect that what you are hearing are just the ones with issues - not the ones that are fine. That's not to say there aren't problems, just that you always here about the problems and rarely the "no problems".
In fact, I had significantly more 3G issues on my iPhone - finally gave up and just used the iPad exclusively.
