Post Remote Access from Indigo touch
Please help

I got indigo touch to work on my local network but I am having a hard time with my remote access with the iphone.

As a side note I have set up eyeTV and remotetap without much problem.

I have a ATT Uverse 3800HGV-B modem/ router with the wireless turned off that is bridged to an apple airport.

I am running Indigo 4.1.2 and my server is set for
1)remote access 2) Enable iphone... 3) Enable remote RSS feeds 4) required authentication. Prism, and Override web server port are not checked. I also did not enable remote indigo client access.

On my Att uverse modem I added a user defined application "Indigo" that with Protocal TCP (not UDP) from port 8176 to 8176.

On Indigo touch I manually add server with just my IP address. (example : 99.145.165.198. I am note sure if this is all I need to name in the field.

Can anyone help?

Thanks a bunch.

Jeff

Your Indigo and Touch settings look correct...I think the Touch program defaults to port 8176 but it won't hurt anything to add :8176 after the IP address (example : 99.145.165.198:8176).

I'm not familiar with your Uverse router and don't know how it's set up, but usually you need to specify the server address and not just the port to be forwarded. It may need to be set to forward port 8176 from the WAN side to a specific IP address...the internal (NAT) address of your server...on the LAN side.

Again depending on the router and whether it has an internal firewall, in addtion to port forwarding you may need a rule to pass port 8176 inbound...is that what you mean by "added a user defined application "Indigo" that with Protocal TCP (not UDP) from port 8176 to 8176?"

My firewall is only forwarding TCP on 8176 and it works, so that part is correct.

Thanks for the info. Part of my problem is I don't have a good understanding of firewalls, ports, etc. If anyone knows of a good online review please let me know.

I am sure the firewall is where the problem is. One thing is that the modem lists redundant devices. I have the computer name plus the IP address of each item.

Is there a way for me to better map my own network? Should I forward ports to the computer name or the IP address?

Thanks again.

I had eyeTV and remoteTap working before but now I checked them and they are not working either.

Post I got it to work.
So I played around a little and got it to work. However, I still don't really understand what I am doing.

I don't know why my modem lists my laptop and imac twice. I really don't understand what tells indigo touch and my other program remoteTap to go to there respective ports.

Please let me know of any online review of firewalls and ports that is simple to understand.

Thanks again

Glad you got Touch working, and congratulations on being curious enough to want to know how (and smart enough to realize that you don't understand why.)

Think of ports as an additional level of address. The IP address gets a data packet to your computer's hardware; the port specifies a software routing inside your computer.

In most cases, you'd use the IP address in programming your firewall rather than computer names.

Here's a tutorial that may help you get started. Ignore the sales pitch at the end; the glossary is helpful.

And here'sa more indepth tutorial.

Keep in mind as you're reading that a firewall is different from a router, although the two functions are often combined in one box and there is overlap.

Hi Jeff,

I'm glad it sounds like you got it working. Note we created the GoPrism Reflector service exactly for this reason. It avoids almost all of the firewall, router port forwarding, dynamic IP address changes, etc., issues by establishing a secure connection to a hosted server that you can easily access from anywhere. In some situations it is easy to manually setup everything, but in some configurations it can be nearly impossible to get an external connection from the Internet drilled down to your Mac running Indigo. In those cases GoPrism.com is a good and easy-to-use option.
