tool to use to create the png files

Is there any suggestion for a SIMPLE tool to create the background images?
And are there settings to be aware of for use for iPhone / iPad (# of pixels etc)

I really like Acorn (requires Mountain Lion).

The Control Page editor in Indigo 6 has presets - just select the one you want and it'll show you the dimensions that are optimal for the device/orientation you select.
