Re: Finally - Seamless Wireless Roaming/Handoff

I promise you I don't need to re-read it, I read it carefully the first time. But if Karl says he has Zero Handoff working then I have no reason to disbelieve him. I did try to get it working using his description, but I never managed it, hence the question.

Re: Finally - Seamless Wireless Roaming/Handoff

For AP-Pro (not AC-Pro)

It is not intuitive to set it up.
steps:
1. setup 2 new networks one for 2.4 one for 5 Ghz ( I called them 2 and 5)
- check the mobility " enable seamless roaming (zero-handoff)
- select a channel
- save

you then will have 3 WLAN groups:

2. setup a network, thats more or less straight forward

3. setup the AP. Getting them to work/ register might take some time. You likely need to upgrade the software
you then in configuration select the WLAN GROUP you created before

Many of the options are switched off- like Min RSSi- when you use the "zh" option

The rest of the setup is mostly obvious: setup Ip numbers, ranges, DNS IP dhcp etc.

and you need to queue the changes and push them to the APs

One major thing you need to be aware of: how is your WiFi environment: crowded or empty, pick channel 1/6/11 for 2.4 Ghz etc.. There are many discussions about that
Hope that helps

Karl

ps
I have 3 AP-pro and for the 2.4Ghz channel 2 would have been enough. I am using one of them with a different channel (define a new WLan-group) for some fixed devices (camera etc)
zero handoff vs Zh vs .. the question is: does it work .. THEY call it zero handoff, but likely it does not follow any public standard, but again it works for me.

AH!

Finally I think I can see where the confusion is.

I have 3 x UniFi AP-AC-Pro's and I've seen AP Pro's and AC Pros's mentioned, so I thought that they were the same thing - I guess not... :(
I've certainly not got those options on mine.

PS Thank very much for the guide

Yeah,

Ubiquti's naming conventions have not helped, even in this thread.

The good news is that the UAP-AC-PRO are great APs and will get better at handoff once Ubiquiti supports 802.11 r/k/v (they have a beta out now, but it's probably not worth the effort to install). In the meantime, you could look in the Ubiquiti forums for advice on making adjustments to the min RSSI setting - this will force the client to change APs sooner and presumably smoother.

Re: Finally - Seamless Wireless Roaming/Handoff

The UAP-PRO is $ 50 more than the UAC-PRO on Amazon.

BUT::::: I cant find the UAP-PRO product anymore on the UBNT web site only UAC-PRO .
There is still the UAP-PRO docu

Their communication is really bad, but the product seems to work

The UAP-PRO is a legacy product: https://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap/ If you look at the Unifi
Product page here, click on the "Legacy" button to see it in context: https://www.ubnt.com/products/#wireless

It was replaced with the UAP-AC-PRO somewhere in Q4 2015

As for why it's more expensive, I don't know. Perhaps the seller is taking advantage of those who need compatibility with existing systems?

I'm being careful to call the UAP-AC-PRO by its full name so I don't further add to the confusion on this thread.

YES still there,
their communication is a real mess

just chatted with a rep: the UAP-AC-PRO does not support the hand-off yet: "they are working on it" .. whatever that means.

Anyway I am set for right now. Any more APs in my house would actually reduce throughput ..

It's hard to tell exactly what you're getting. The Ars Technica Review gives only a little information:

- Connection between the APs is wireless only (suggesting slower potential max throughput when connected to a satellite antenna)
- Atheros CPU (not ZHO capable as far as we know - ZHO capable APs use a Broadcom CPU)
- Does not support 802.11 r/k/v (yet)

I don't see Indigo users selecting this system over the other Ubiquiti systems, but the good news is that it does let you ssh into the system, so Karl could probably write a plugin for it. :D
