Using the Home Window

The Home Window in Indigo helps you create and organize your items (Devices, Triggers, Time/Date Actions, Action Groups, and Control Pages) into folders, much the same way that Mail allows you to file messages into folders. Folders also allow you to easily control which Devices, Time/Date Actions, Control Pages, and Variables are displayed in the various remote User Interfaces (UIs), such as Indigo Touch and Web control pages.

Home Window Basics

The Home Window has 4 sections:

  1. Outline View (where folders are displayed)
  2. Item List
  3. Item Detail
  4. Status Bar

as shown in the following figure:

Outline View

The outline view is divided up into 5 categories: DEVICES, TRIGGERS, TIME/DATE ACTIONS, ACTION GROUPS, and CONTROL PAGES. Each of the item categories may have an unlimited number of folders, which are created by clicking on the + icon at the bottom of the view (folders may only be one level deep - nested folders aren't supported). The paradigm is very similar to that of Apple's Mail application. Like Mail, an item can be in one and only one folder. The Folder column also shows what folder an item is in. The main difference between Mail's outline view and Indigo's is that each category name, when selected, will show all items of that type, regardless of their enclosing folder. This was done so that you could easily view all items of a category in the Item List. You will notice from the example that items may also not be in a folder: this is indicated by the name of the category in the Folder column.

To move an item to a folder, simply drag the item from the Item List to the appropriate folder. Note: you may only drag items to folders of the same category.

Also like Mail, the gear icon has a popup menu attached that allows you to manage Folders and their attributes:

A couple of points about this menu:

Item List

The item list contains the list of items for the selected category or folder. Each category has columns that are specific to that category, but they all contain Folder (as mentioned earlier) and DEVICES and ACTION GROUPS also contain Remote Display. This checkbox is the same as the Display in remote UI checkbox on the Edit Device and Edit Action Group dialogs. If you right-click (control-click) on any device, a contextual menu is displayed to toggle the Remote Display flag and to take you to the How-To Wiki page for that particular device type.

The buttons at the top of the list apply to whatever is being viewed at the time they are clicked. So, if you're looking at action groups in the "Climate" folder, and you click the New... button, the Create Action Group dialog will come up. If you save the new Action Group, it will be put into the "Climate" folder since that is what you were viewing. The search box will allow you to search through the items that you are currently viewing - so if you're looking at all ACTION GROUPS, then you can find the one you want by typing in part of its name.

To move an item to a folder, simply drag the item from the list to the appropriate folder in the Outline View. Note: you may only drag items to folders of the same category. Tip: you can reorder the table columns by clicking and dragging the column header.

Item Detail

The item detail area varies depending on what is selected in the Item List. If a LampLinc is selected, for instance, you'll see controls to turn on/off the lamp, brighten/dim, etc. Triggers and Time/Date Actions will show a summary of themselves and allow you to execute the actions and enable/disable/upload. Action Groups will show a summary of all the actions and allow you to execute them. Control Pages will allow you to open them in your default browser.

Status Bar

The status bar shows general status information. The long bar beside the Indigo icon will show green bars going from left to right to show that Indigo is sending a command, and purple bars going from right to left indicate that a message or reply is coming in. Sunrise/sunset are the relative times for your area (if you have Latitude and Longitude configured correctly for your system). Next action in shows when the next time/date action will execute.
