access point rf signal bridging
access point rf signal bridging

All the Very Important "Bridging" Functionality of the INSTEON SignaLinc RF Pair. Plus . . .

. . . the AccessPoint will receive wireless transmitted INSTEON RF commands from devices such as the INSTEON RemoteLinc. These commands are then placed on the power line where they can make it to your various INSTEON SwitchLinc V2 Dimmers, INSTEON LampLinc V2 Dimmers, or any other INSTEON devices you have in your network.

What’s the Relationship between AccessPoints and the RemoteLinc?

INSTEON Access Points are required for the RemoteLinc. The RemoteLinc’s RF INSTEON signals need to be received by the internal antenna of the nearest AccessPoint and then bridged (via the other AccessPoint in your house) with all of your power line INSTEON devices. The INSTEON SignaLinc RF Pair are NOT responsive to the RF signals transmitted by the RemoteLinc. The Access Point is the only “receiver” that can handle the INSTEON-based RF signals generated by the RemoteLinc. That signal is then “beamed” across to the other AccessPoint positioned on the other 110V power leg in your home. The INSTEON command is instantly placed on the power line by the AccessPoints and sent to the INSTEON LampLinc, SwitchLinc, ApplianceLinc, etc that is being addressed. Or, to Indigo for any specialized action you have defined.

What’s the Relationship between AccessPoints and SignaLinc RF Modules?

“If I already have my INSTEON network supported by the SignaLinc RF Pair, can I get by with just one AccessPoint?”

Possibly.
Just remember when you push the button on your new RemoteLinc, the INSTEON RF signal has to be able to reach an AccessPoint where it can then make it on to your home’s power line. Once it’s on the power line, then it would then be accessible by a SignaLinc RF. The SignaLinc RF can also make sure the (now) power line INSTEON command gets to the other 110V leg by communicating with your other SignaLinc RF module. But. . . if your wireless INSTEON RF transmitter (like the RemoteLinc) is sending signals from nooks and crannies in your home that are out of range of your single AccessPoint module, then you might have problems. A second AccessPoint is probably in order, and in fact, you may want to go ahead and replace/upgrade your SignaLinc RF pair with the AccessPoint pair.

Choices, Choices

You can, of course, choose to supplement or replace an existing INSTEON SignaLinc RF Pair with one or more AccessPoints to handle the RemoteLinc (and future INSTEON-based RF devices) you purchase. Remember that the AccessPoints will do the bridging and repeating that the SignaLinc RF Pair does with the added functionality of handling the INSTEON RF protocol. Therefore, you may want choose to upgrade your SingaLinc RF Pair with the AccessPoints.

NOTE: The RemoteLinc and the AccessPoints are not X10 compatible. That means the RemoteLinc cannot be used to send X10-based RF signals to an X10 RF transceiver like the W800RF32A and similarly the AccessPoints cannot interpret X10 RF signals sent from a Motion Detector or a PalmPad.

NOTE:The AccessPoint module is covered by a 2 year warranty.

I have to tell you that I'm much happier than I anticipated I would be with Indigo and all of the INSTEON products. Right now, I have my entire home running off of a Mac mini that I think I've restarted about 3 times since i...
